Lagodekhi reserve

The author of the project was professor Nikolay I. Kuznetsov, the well-known botanist and explorer of Caucasian flora and fauna. The researcher delivered a detailed report, describing Lagodekhi canyon as one of the most important representative sites of Caucasian flora. Therefore, it was necessary to transform this area into a reserve.

The Academy had received the proposal to make Lagodekhi canyon a reserve from Ludwig Mlokosewich (1831-1909) back at the beginning of the 20th century. After his death, his work was taken over by Nicolay Kuznetsov, whose efforts brought this thought into being. Continue reading

Agri-environment schemes provide greater choice for winter birds

ecologists from the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology in Lancaster will report that fruit from certain hedgerow species can remain an important food source for birds until Christmas if hedges remain unmanaged, and that agri-environment schemes may have more of an impact on how farmers manage their hedges than whether they farm organically or conventionally.

The results are based on a study of 10 pairs of organic and conventional cereal farms in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, where the number of hedgerow species and numbers of berries in hedges were assessed. Farmers were also interviewed about their management practices. Continue reading

Ecologists Push Shift from Whaling to Whale-Watching

It is also a new way for communities who once hunted the world’s largest animals to earn a living, say the environmentalists who helped to set up the biggest whale sanctuary in the Mediterranean.
“When I saw my first whale some 10 years ago, it changed my life completely,” said Paolo Guglielmi, head of the marine unit at the WWF Mediterranean Program.

As if to prove his point, dozens of people on board the tourist boat rushed to get a glimpse of the gray back of a whale arching for a few seconds above the waves before disappearing again, leaving the crowd momentarily speechless. Continue reading

World War Two Mines Found Off Spanish Coast

Bomb disposal experts cordoned off the beach to deactivate the first mine which measured some 20 inches in diameter. They then found another mine nearby, a police spokesman in the northeastern city of Girona said. The second mine was due to be deactivated Monday. "The first one appeared on July 2 and it was deactivated … today they found another one 500 meters (1,640 ft) away from the first," he said. "It looks like they come from the Second World War," he added.

Spain did not take part in the 1939 to 1945 Second World War but the stretch of the Mediterranean where the mines were found is close to the French border.
