Programme objectives:

Most of the participators came from distant suburb of Zakamsk, where dismantling of rockets is planned. GAI traffic police attempted to block buses carrying demonstrators, but Zakamsk inhabitants in buses threated to blockade only bridge of the city over river Kama, and police was forced to pass them through. In 11 PM, when most of the participators of the meeting had left, OMON special forces used brutal force to arrest blockaders of the administration. 18 persons were taken to police station of Lenin district. Wolves have grown in number to about 55 since first crossing into the country from Italy in 1992, according to official figures.

But farmers in southern France have complained that the wolves are killing their sheep. The government estimates that wolves killed 2,808 sheep in 2002 compared with 192 in 1994.

The government, which initially unveiled plans to allow the killing of up to seven wolves by the end of this year, announced it would allow a maximum of four to be killed in southeastern France.

The Association For The Protection of Wild Animals said the government move was illegal and the decision to kill up to four wolves was arbitrary and impossible to defend scientifically.

Covered with stunted trees, palm-studded grassland, and gallery fores?s, up to 70 percent of the Western-Europe-sized savanna or cerrado has already been leveled, according to environmental group Conservation International (CI).

“There is a lack of planning to promote controlled settlement of the cerrado,” said Ricardo Machado, director of the conservation group in Brazil. Continue reading →

“We can expect to see a commercialization of fuel-cell cars in 10 years,” DaimlerChrysler’s Head of Technology and Environmental Communications Edith Meissner said in Singapore, as the company delivered five cars for road testing in the Southeast Asian city-state.

Since 1994, DaimlerChrysler has invested US$1 billion in the technology, which powers vehicles with compressed hydrogen. The engines emit no pollutants, as the only waste material is pure water. Continue reading →

Hundreds of the ungainly sea birds appear to have flown off course in search of food during their annual migration from the Baja California peninsula to British Columbia, with young pelicans turning up in Arizona deserts, biologists said. Wildlife sanctuaries in California and Arizona have taken in scores of young birds found emaciated and injured over the past month, but veterinarians have been unable to link their plight to disease or pollution.
