Great Day for Biofuels! Russia Ratifies Kyoto Protocol Treaty

This is a major victory for alternative fuels like biodiesel and ethanol, which reduce CO2 emissions.

On Nov. 5, 2004 Reuters released the following information:

Ukrainian MFA Press Service Head Markiyan Lubkivskyy announced at a briefing that Ukraine had presented a project on restoration of water navigation in the Ukrainian part of the Danube Delta at the 18th session of the International Co-ordination Council of UNESCO Man and Biosphere Program. According to Lubkivskyy, the members of the Council esteemed Ukrainian project positively. Japan in talks with Romania on emissions trading under Kyoto pact

The talks are aimed at supporting Japanese trading houses and other firms as they try to enter the East European country’s emissions trading market, the officials said, adding Tokyo hopes to sign a memorandum of understanding on the issue with Bucharest. The Kyoto Protocol is expected to take effect in February with the completion of Russia’s ratification process earlier this month. Under the pact, trading of emission rights is defined as a means of achieving reduction goals for countries that ratified the protocol. Continue reading

Kyoto can’t do the job alone says expert

One of the world’s top thinkers on climate change, Eileen Claussen, says more than just the Kyoto Protocol is needed to tackle the issue. The protocol must be buttressed with other approaches, Claussen told the Business Herald in Auckland.Claussen is the head of the highly regarded Pew Centre for Global Climate Change in the US.The Kyoto Protocol is set to come into force in three months, after President Vladimir Putin on Friday signed Russia’s ratification of the treaty and delivered the critical mass of international support it required to become binding. Putin Signs Bill to Ratify Kyoto Protocol

Both houses of parliament last month ratified the protocol, which aims to stem global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Putin signed the bill on Thursday, the Kremli? said.

Without Russia’s support, the pact ? which has been rejected by the United States and Australia ? could not have come into effect. It needed endorsement by 55 industrialized nations accounting for at least 55 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions in 1990. Continue reading

ussia has almost finished ratifying Kyoto, which aims to stabilize emissions of greenhouse gases and awaits President Vladimir Putin signature to come into force worldwide, and must now develop the mechanisms necessary to implement the pact.
